There’s something magical about fall in Western North Carolina. The air turns crisp, the mountains come alive with color, and suddenly it feels like the perfect time to gather your people close and capture those fleeting moments before another season slips by. It’s my favorite time of year (perks because it’s my birthday season too!).
As an Asheville and Hendersonville family photographer, I get asked all the time how to make fall portraits feel natural, stress-free, and full of authentic connection. The truth is, with just a little preparation, your photos can reflect both the beauty of the mountains and the heart of your family.
If you’re considering family photos this fall, here are my favorite tips to help you prepare—so your portraits feel relaxed, authentic, and full of the beauty of WNC in autumn.

Fall colors in the mountains have a short but breathtaking window, often peaking from mid to late October. Pair that with the glow of golden hour (that dreamy, soft light right before sunset), and you’ve got the perfect recipe for portraits.
That’s why I plan my Fall Mini Sessions during this sweet spot—so your family is photographed at the most beautiful time of year, with the kind of light that makes everyone look their best.
The number one question I get before family photos is: “What should we wear?” For fall, think cozy and layered—earthy neutrals, soft creams, denim, or warm tones like rust, mustard, or forest green. Add a little texture with sweaters, scarves, or boots, and you’re set.
The goal isn’t for everyone to match perfectly (we can retire the “all in plaid” look!)—it’s for outfits to feel coordinated and natural. When your clothes work with the colors of the season instead of against them, the result is timeless.

If you’ve got little ones, the best photos often come when they’re relaxed and happy. Dress them in layers so they’re not too hot or cold, bring a small snack or comfort item, and don’t stress if they wiggle or laugh in the middle of photos. Those are often the best moments anyway.
One of the reasons I love mini sessions for families with kids? They’re short and sweet—just the right amount of time before attention spans run out.
Western North Carolina is spoiled for gorgeous fall backdrops. Apple orchards, rolling fields, mountain overlooks, and forests full of color—it’s hard to go wrong.
When I plan minis, I carefully scout a location that feels both beautiful and convenient, so you can focus on your family instead of logistics. It’s all about creating an easy, stress-free experience that results in photos you’ll want to frame. This year, it’s Grandad’s Orchards in Hendersonville, NC. They have the perfect mixture of mountain views, apple orchards, and green pastures.
The best family photos aren’t the ones where everyone is stiffly smiling at the camera. They’re the ones where you’re snuggling your kids, laughing at an inside joke, or walking hand in hand through the leaves.
This season of life deserves to be remembered exactly as it is—not polished to perfection, but cherished for the connection you share.

If you’re dreaming of cozy sweaters, golden leaves, and family portraits that feel as warm as the season itself, my Fall Mini Sessions are designed just for you.
They’re quick, fun, and full of natural connection—perfect for updating family photos before the holidays.
I offer family photography in Asheville, Hendersonville, and throughout Western North Carolina, and I’d love to capture your family in this beautiful season. Spots for Fall Minis are limited (because autumn doesn’t last forever!), so if this is your year, now’s the time to reserve your spot.
