Top Tips for WNC Headshot and Branding Sessions

Branding Photograhy

Before we talk about outfits, posing, or where to stand—let’s talk about the thing I hear most often (because, I get it):

“I’m not photogenic.”
“I look bad in photos.”
“I never like pictures of myself.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Most people start here – me included. Being photographed often feels vulnerable, sticky, and sometimes baggage-laden.

The truth is, it’s rarely about how you actually look. You could be dressed to the nines and dolled to the top of your head, but still feel like the images don’t connect.

Great branding and headshot photography ultimately isn’t about perfection (hear me out). It’s about connection and clarity—to yourself, to your story, and to the people you want to reach. When that connection is there, confidence follows naturally.

With that in mind, here are the best tips and practices to help you feel prepared, comfortable, and connected to your end goal – showing up authentically, communicating your brand creatively, and connecting with yourself and your audience.

1. Start with Connection, Not a Checklist

Before anything else, we come back to connection—because your photos should feel like a real interaction, not a performance. That’s where our Design Call comes into play if you’ve scheduled a custom session. This is where we get to the grit of you and your brand – why do you do this business, what makes your heart light up when you think about your brand, who would you most love to work with.

We’re fortunate enough to live in a place like Asheville and WNC where creativity and authenticity are valued – often even encouraged. Your audience wants to know who they’re working with – not just what you do.  branding photos should reflect how it feels to sit across from you, walk into your space, or work alongside you.

Ask yourself:

  • How do I want my clients or customers to feel when they land on my website?
  • What energy do I bring into a room?
  • What makes my business feel personal, local, and human?
  • What do I like about my industry’s images that I see, and how do I want to show up differently?

When your images are rooted in connection, they naturally tell a stronger story—one that builds trust before you ever say a word.

2. Wear What Helps You Feel Like Yourself

Connection starts with comfort. If you don’t feel like you in what you’re wearing, it’s hard to relax—and that disconnect shows up on camera.

For branding and headshot sessions, I always recommend wardrobe choices that feel like an elevated version of your everyday style. You are not required to go shopping – although if that brings you a spark of joy and excitement, you absolutely may! In our Design Call we will go over more specific and YOU focused styling ideas. For now, here are some thoughts to start with (keep in mind, your brand and vision comes first, some of these recommendations may not align so disregard. Let’s chat together more):

Best practices:

  • Color pallets depend largely on your brand and complextion. If you’re unsure what colors work best for your tones, I always recommend a color matching option with The Hue Muse in Asheville. Personal experience – she does an amazing job helping you find what accentuates your features best.
  • Avoid bold logos (unless they’re your brand), busy patterns, or anything that pulls attention away from your face. This is where a custom session comes into play – we chat through your brand identity and whether or not features like this mirror your brand and vision.
  • Layers add depth and flexibility without feeling forced. Bring a light jacket or sweater to mix things up.
  • Fit matters – each body shape is different. Wear what accents and fits your natural shape.

When you feel grounded in what you’re wearing, it’s easier to show up with confidence and presence.

3. Keep Grooming Natural and Intentional

Simple, intentional grooming helps remove distractions so your personality and expression can take center stage.

  • Style your hair the way you normally wear it, just a bit more polished.
  • Makeup should enhance your features and even skin tone, not feel heavy or unfamiliar.
  • Facial hair should be freshly trimmed and shaped.
  • Iron or spray your clothes before your session.
  • Bring a brush and face powder.
  • Get a good night of sleep and hydrate.
  • Allow yourself an extra minute or two before your session to sit in your car and take some deep breathes.

Professional hair and makeup can be a great choice, especially for branding sessions that will be used across your website, social media, and marketing materials for years to come. But again, this must align with your brand, vision, and intention. This is a personal preference that is discussed during your Inquiry and Design Calls for custom sessions. If you’ve scheduled and Express Session, recommended stylists are provided if you choose this route.

4. Photograph With Purpose (and People) in Mind

Branding and headshot photos aren’t just images—they’re tools for connection.

Whether you’re a creative, small business owner, or service-based professional serving Asheville or the surrounding Western North Carolina community, your photos should feel approachable and usable—especially for local businesses built on relationships, referrals, and trust.

Think about where your images will live:

  • Website homepage and about page
  • Instagram and social media content
  • Email newsletters
  • Press features, publications, or speaking engagements
  • Wall art for your public or personal office space

This helps shape everything from framing to expression, ensuring you walk away with a gallery that feels cohesive, versatile, and genuinely reflective of your brand.

5. Trust the Process – and Allow Yourself to Be Seen

Almost everyone tells me they feel awkward at first. That’s normal. You are not required to smile all the time, and you are never required to strike a pose that feels uncomfortable or unnatural. My favorite phrase is, “sit or stand how feels more comfortable for you right now, and I’ll adjust you as needed.”

Connection takes a moment to build, especially in front of a camera. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands—that’s my job.

Through gentle direction, natural movement, and space to breathe, we create images that feel relaxed and real. The best moments often happen once you stop trying to “get it right” and simply show up.

Brene Brown is an eternal favorite of mine, “Sometimes, the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.”

6. Presence Over Perfection

The strongest branding and headshot photos aren’t about flawless posture or forced smiles. They’re about presence.

Take a breath (trust me, we do this a lot). Let your shoulders drop and close your eyes for a moment. Reground, and feel your feet on the floor. Think about the people you serve and why your work matters to them.

When you’re grounded and connected, your confidence comes through naturally. That’s what people respond to.

7. Prepare Thoughtfully, Then Let Go

Preparation helps you feel confident, but connection is what makes the images meaningful.

Once your session begins, give yourself permission to let go of expectations. You’ve done the work—now it’s time to trust the process and allow yourself to show up.

Final Thoughts

For small businesses and entrepreneurs across Asheville, Hendersonville, and Western North Carolina, your branding and headshot photos are often the first point of connection. Before someone reads your words or fills out your contact form, they’re deciding how you feel—approachable, confident, grounded, real.

That’s why this process is not rushed, forced, or staged. Together, we focus on Connection, Creativity, and Collaboration.

Strong branding photography isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about creating space for you to show up naturally and letting that connection come through.

If you’re looking for branding or headshot photos that feel aligned, relaxed, and true to you—and you want images that connect with the people you’re meant to serve—I’d love to start that conversation.
